Turkey Outscore Brave Iceland in Overtime
Turkey abolished a 10-point third-quarter lead but found an extra gear in overtime to reach an 111-102 victory over Iceland in the entertaining high-scoring extravaganza that concluded Group B action in Berlin on Thursday night.
Turning Point: Ersan Ilyasova spent the opening minute of the extra session powering his way in the paint to earn consecutive trips to the free-throw line and bring Turkey ahead 94-91 and Ali Muhammed (Bobby Dixon) knocked down a triple from the left corner with 1:35 remaining to the end of overtime to cap-off an 11-1 Turkish burst that made it 102-92
Stats Don’t Lie: Turkey could do little to stop Iceland’s three-point scoring prowess as the Nordic team scored an eye-popping 48 of their 91 points in regulation from beyond the arc, on 16-of-37 shooting, to force overtime. But Turkey managed to make the best possible use of their size advantage and out-rebounded the Nordic team 53 to 31.
Game Hero: Muhammed conducted the Turkish offence to make sure the frontcourt would get the balls inside they needed against a small-sized team like Iceland and finished himself whenever he had to, collecting a game-high 28 points on 9-for-14 from the floor. More impressively, the diminutive point guard collected 12 rebounds to register a double-double effort.
Bottom Line: Turkey got the short end of the stick in their three-way tie at 3-2 with Spain and Italy and advance to the Final Phase in Lille as fourth from Group B. Iceland have finished in sixth place in the group in their maiden EuroBasket appearance.
