THE LANGUAGE
If you have
traveled to any non-English speaking country, you surely know how
important it is to learn a few words of your destination's language. A
few simple words will win you immediate respect, and help to make your
vacation more enjoyable. Turkish is a language you may easily have never
heard spoken, and not understand a word of when you arrive. It does
contain some words borrowed from French (spelled drastically different),
as well as a few similarities with Arabic, but overall, Turkish is very
unique.
PRONOUNCIATION GUIDE Once you learn the basics of the letters in its alphabet, Turkish is a very easy language to speak, as it is truly phonetic. Be careful to not combine letters into dipthongs, as you will see the possibilities for doing so often. The alphabet has been Latin-based since Ataturk did away with the Arabic one in 1928. But some of the letters have different sounds than other similar-looking alphabets. |
